James served as President and CEO of ING Mutual Funds with approximately $100 billion under management. He has held senior executive positions with other mortgage banking, investment banking, and financial services companies. James was also a New York City-based corporate lawyer advising on M&A and corporate finance matters. In addition, James serves on several boards. He has served on boards associated with Arizona State University, including the ASU Law School Centre for Law Science and Innovation, and recently served as a lead director of Allis Chalmers Oil & Gas Services (NYSE) and a director of a Michigan-based mutual fund and institutional asset management company.
Managing Partner, Chief Investment Officer
Isser oversees the investment decision-making process and portfolio investment strategy. His responsibilities include investment management, deal structuring and execution, portfolio monitoring and exit strategy assessment. As Chief Investment Officer, Isser has overseen more than $9 billion invested in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Isser was previously the youngest director at HSBC. At HSBC, Isser ran the Toronto-based Equity Structured Finance Group, a group that executed over $7 billion in transactions.
Partner, Chief Strategist
Kalman is the Chief Strategist of the Investment Adviser and is involved with developing the strategic direction of the firm and implementing strategic decisions. In addition, Kalman assists with the general management of the Investment Adviser. Prior to joining the Investment Adviser, Kalman worked with Isser at HSBC's Equity Structured Finance Group and has consistently worked with Isser on various projects since then.
Cheryl Brandon, CFA
Partner, Investment Management
Cheryl is responsible for deal
origination, deal structuring and execution, portfolio monitoring and exit in
the precious metals mining business. Prior to joining Waterton Global, Cheryl
managed a resource investment strategy for Canada’s third largest hedge fund
where she focused on global investment opportunities in the precious and base
metals sectors. Cheryl has 10 years’ experience evaluating and financing mining
companies; she began her investment career as a research analyst in 2003 and
became a Chartered Financial Analyst Charter Holder and member of the Toronto
Society of Financial Analysts in 2007.
Kamal Toor, LL.B, JD
Partner, General Counsel
Prior to joining Waterton Global, Kamal
practiced law at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP (Toronto, Canada) and Allen
& Overy LLP (Singapore). In each of his prior roles, Kamal advised both
Canadian and international clients on corporate finance, M&A and securities
law matters. Kamal has received a
B.Comm, an LL.B. and a J.D. and is a member in good standing of the Law Society
of Upper Canada.
Richard Wells, CPA, CA
Partner, Chief Financial Officer
Richard is responsible for all financial aspects of Waterton Global's corporate office and operating subsidiaries including accounting, reporting, taxation, investor relations and administrative matters. Richard serves as the Chair of Waterton Global's Valuation Committee. He also provides financial oversight as a board member for Waterton Global's various operating companies. Richard was previously a Manager of Financial Reporting at a Canadian automotive company, Magna International, Inc. He was awarded the Canadian Chartered Accountant designation (Ontario Honour Role) in 2002 while employed in the audit practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Managing Director, Investments
Gordon’s principal focus includes the origination and execution of new investment opportunities in the precious metals mining business. Gordon has 10 years’ experience in capital markets and has been involved in over $5 billion of resource financings. Prior to joining Waterton Global, Gordon was a Director of Institutional Sales at a Canadian investment bank where he specialized in discovering and financing junior mining and energy companies. Gordon studied at the University of Toronto and began his career as a financial analyst with RBC Capital Markets.
Kyle McKay, CFA
Managing Director, Investments
Kyle is responsible for institutional fundraising in Europe and North America. Kyle has 14 years’ experience identifying, analyzing and executing public and private securities investments within the resource sector. Prior to joining Waterton Global, Kyle spent 11 years as the lead portfolio manager of a long/short Resource hedge fund. He began his investment career in 1999 as a research analyst and received the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2002.
Stephen Rea, MBA
Managing Director, Investments
Stephen is a member of Waterton Global’s fundraising and investment management groups. Stephen has originated, executed and managed private equity and M&A transactions in the resource, energy, infrastructure and real estate industries in North America, China and Southeast Asia. Prior to Waterton Global, Stephen was the President of a public mining corporation. He has also served as the Head of Asia for a Canadian investment bank. Stephen began his private equity career by co-leading Asian asset allocation and investment management for a Canadian fund. Stephen holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern).
Chris provides accounting,
reporting and administrative support to Waterton Global’s corporate office and
operating subsidiaries. Chris is also responsible for treasury and commodity
settlement functions for Waterton Global and its operating subsidiaries. Prior
to joining Waterton Global, Chris worked as an independent financial consultant
specializing in the implementation of accounting software for the junior mining
sector. Chris previously worked for CIBC and State Street in accounting and
reporting functions. In these positions, Chris was responsible for IIROC, MFDA
and other regulatory reporting, financial reporting and fund valuation.
Andrea Treier, CPA, CA
Director, Financial Reporting
Andrea's role includes responsibility for financial and investor reporting relating to Waterton's portfolio as well as preparing and implementing appropriate accounting policies. Andrea also manages the preparation of the annual financial statements and directs the year end audit process. As a Chartered Professional Accountant, Andrea joined Waterton from the audit practice of KPMG Canada LLP. In her position as Manager in the Energy & Natural Resources group Andrea specialized in the mining industry and worked exclusively with both junior and global mining companies.
Laura Fernandez, LL.B
Director, Associate General Counsel
Laura conducts comprehensive due
diligence analyses on prospective investments and investment counter-parties,
and identifies legal issues and risks associated with Waterton Global’s
potential transactions and investment structures. Laura assists in negotiating transaction
terms, generating and drafting legal documents, and the legal oversight of
asset management following execution. Prior to joining Waterton Global, Laura
was a member of the mining and financial services groups at Heenan Blaikie LLP
(Toronto, Canada), where she acted for financial institutions and junior and
mid-size mining companies. Laura holds a B.A. and an LL.B from the University
of Western Ontario and Ottawa University, respectively. She received a
Certificate in Mining Law from Osgoode Hall and is a lawyer in good standing
with the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Aaron Wolochatiuk, J.D.
Associate General Counsel
Aaron conducts comprehensive due diligence analyses on prospective
investments and assists in reviewing and generating legal documents.
Prior to joining Waterton Global, Aaron articled at Heenan Blaikie LLP
(Toronto, Canada). Aaron has competed in and been awarded numerous
awards at international advocacy competitions, including the award for
best written submission at a North American and European competition on
the law of the World Trade Organization. Aaron holds a J.D. from Queen’s
University, a Certificate in International Business Law from the Bader
International Study Centre, and is a lawyer in good standing with the
Law Society of Upper Canada.
Paul Zogala, CMT
Paul is responsible for monitoring
and trading Waterton Global’s commodity investments as well as developing and
implementing portfolio hedging strategies. He is also responsible for technical
and fundamental modeling of macro-economic trends, industry screening and
benchmarking, and identification and analysis of new investment opportunities.
Prior to joining Waterton Global, Paul held analyst positions at an independent
Canadian investment bank and BMO Nesbitt Burns. Paul received his Chartered
Market Technician (CMT) designation in 2011 and is a Chartered Financial
Analyst Level II candidate.
Mark Hill, B.Eng.
Partner, Head of Evaluations
Mark is the head of the
evaluations group and conducts asset evaluations and due diligence reviews by
leading a multi-disciplined team through the diligence process. This process
includes identification and evaluation of new investment opportunities,
preliminary screening, technical due diligence, financial modeling, and
industry benchmarking. Mark has 25 years’ experience in the mining industry,
most recently with Barrick Gold as the Vice President of Evaluations and
previously as the Vice President of Mining, Capital Projects. Prior to Barrick
Gold, Mark held senior positions with BHP Billiton, AngloGold Ashanti, Placer
Dome and WMC Ltd. Mark has a wide variety of international operations, project
and construction based experience. Mark has a Bachelor in Mining Engineering
(B.Eng.) and a Graduate Diploma in Mineral Economics.
Peter Ingram, P.Eng., B.Sc
Partner, Head of Mining Operations
As the head of the Mine Development
and Operations group, Peter oversees all of Waterton Global’s operations. Peter
has 25 years’ experience in the Canadian and international mining industry and
a wide variety of experience with small and large operations and development
projects. Peter was previously the Senior Director of Mining at Barrick Gold. He
has also held senior positions with Kinross Gold, Anglo American, Redpath and
Minova. Peter holds a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mining, a Bachelor of
Applied Science (B.Sc.) in Geology and is a member in good standing of the
Professional Engineers of Ontario.
Principal, Chief Operating Officer
Jack is responsible for leading,
developing and managing Waterton Global’s operating teams. Jack has over 30
years’ experience leading high quality operational and project mining teams in
North America, South America, Asia and Africa. He recently served as Chief
Operating Officer of a Barrick Gold / Antofagasta Joint Venture (Tethyan
Copper). Jack has a proven track record of successful operations and
maintenance management on projects ranging from definition through to
Michael Woloschuk, P.Eng. B.Sc
Michael conducts asset evaluations and due diligence reviews by leading a multi-disciplined team through the diligence process. Michael is also responsible for process plant design, metallurgy and operational support. Mike joined Waterton Global in 2012 after working with Barrick Gold’s corporate evaluations group. Mike has 18 years’ experience in the mining industry, including senior roles in technology development, operations and engineering consulting. Michael has managed process and technical teams at all stages of the project cycle. He has held leadership roles with Hatch, Bateman Engineering and Aker Solutions. Michael is a member in good standing of the Professional Engineers of Ontario.
Jaimie Donovan, B.Eng. B.Comm
Jaimie conducts asset evaluations
and due diligence reviews by leading a multi-disciplined team through the
diligence process. Jaimie is also responsible for underground mine design and optimization
and operational support. Jaimie joined Waterton Global in 2012 after working
with Barrick Gold’s corporate evaluations group for 5 years. Prior to Barrick
Gold, Jaimie was the Technical Services Superintendent at the Hemlo Mining
Complex in Ontario, Canada. Jaimie has held a variety of operational, technical
and supervisory roles in the international mining industry. Jaimie holds a
Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mining and a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm)
Jackie Wheeler, P.Eng
Jackie conducts asset evaluations and due diligence reviews by leading a multi-disciplined team through the diligence process. Jackie is involved in underground and open pit mine design, optimization and operational support. Jackie joined Waterton Global in 2013 after working with Barrick Gold’s corporate evaluations group. Prior to Barrick Gold, Jackie was the Senior Mine Engineer (Projects / Planning) at Teck’s Quebrada Blanca Mine in Chile. Jackie has also held a variety of operational, technical and supervisory roles in Canadian mining operations. Jackie holds a Bachelor of Science in Mining.
Nicos Pfeiffer, B.Sc
Manager, Geology & Resource Estimation
Nicos provides technical support
for the evaluations and operations groups. His area of expertise is exploration
and resource modeling. Prior to joining Waterton Global, Nicos worked for
Barrick Gold at Hemlo Gold Mines where he conducted geostatistical reviews,
resource and reserve estimation, geologic modeling and drill targeting. Nicos
has also worked at Barrick Gold’s Ruby Hill and Bald Mountain Mines in Nevada
and the Canadian Exploration Group based in Vancouver. Nicos holds an Honours
B.Sc. in Earth Science from Carleton University with a Citation in Applied
Geostatistics from the University of Alberta.
Ken Strobbe, P.Eng., BA.Sc
Manager, Mine Engineering
Ken manages the technical
functions of Waterton Global’s operations. He works at operating sites to directly
supervise technical and operational personnel, develop and implement mine
plans, and ensure that proper reporting practices are being followed. Ken
joined Waterton Global in 2012 after working with Barrick Gold’s capital
projects group as a Manager of Underground Projects. Ken also held various
underground engineering and supervisory positions at Placer Dome, Echo Bay
Mines and Royal Oak Mines. Ken holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.Sc.) in
Manager, Mineral Processing
Lane is responsible for managing the milling operations of Waterton’s
operations. He relocates to operating sites to supervise milling
personnel, implement best practice operating standards and procedures, focusing
on maximizing throughput and recovery while managing costs. Lane has 28
years of experience in ore processing and managing plant maintenance and
operations for small and large operations. He participated in the commisioning,
operation and supervision of the first fluid bed roaster in the United States
while working for Freeport Gold. Lane has sought after hands on experience in
optimizing milling processes and managing a variety of plant operations.
Tyler Hilkewich, B.Sc, M.Eng. P.Eng
Analyst, Mine Engineering
Tyler provides technical support
for Waterton Global’s evaluations and operations groups. His area of expertise
is in developing optimized pit shells, mine plans, and operating and capital
cost estimates for open pit operations. Prior to joining Waterton Global, Tyler
worked for Barrick Gold as the Mining Projects Coordinator based at Lumwana,
Zambia. Tyler also worked as a mining engineer at the Ruby Hill mine in Nevada
and at Barrick Gold’s corporate office in Toronto, Canada. Tyler holds a BA,
B.Sc, P.Eng and M.Eng.
Jordan Lianza, B.Sc
Jordan conducts mining analysis
and provides analytical support to Waterton Global’s evaluations, operations
and investment groups. Jordan’s responsibilities include life of mine financial
modeling, benchmarking, and coordinating internal industry reports and
presentations. Prior to joining Waterton Global, Jordan worked at Barrick Gold
as an Evaluations Analyst for the Corporate Development group and as a Risk
Analyst for the Capital Projects group. Jordan holds an Honors Bachelor of
Science degree from the University of Toronto and is currently enrolled in the
MBA program at Rotman School of Management in Toronto.
